De-Sexing Dogs and Cats
Responsible pet ownership
At Kirrawee Veterinary Clinic, we’re committed to responsible pet ownership. We routinely perform safe and effective desexing for cats, from four months of age, and small breed dogs from six months of age, large breed dogs from twelve months of age, as this is when the procedure is straightforward, and recovery is quick.

Why should I desex my pet?
- Your desexed pet is less likely to get diseases or succumb to certain illnesses, such as mammary cancer, uterine infections and prostate problems
- Reducing behavioural problems such as roaming, aggression towards other animals, and even urine marking (in males)
- A pet that lives longer and leads a healthier life
What does the desexing procedure involve?
Desexing, sterilising, spaying, fixing, neutering—while there are many terms for the procedure, the outcome is the same: your pet will no longer be sexually reproductive. Desexing is a routine, irreversible procedure in which a female pet’s ovaries and uterus are removed, while in males, the testicles are removed.
At Kirrawee Veterinary Clinic, we prioritise your pet’s safety, comfort, and well-being throughout the entire process. Our experienced veterinary team performs desexing under full general anaesthesia, with a sedative and pain relief administered beforehand to help your pet relax. We also offer an optional pre-anaesthetic blood test (Pre-GA), which allows us to check for any hidden health concerns and provides an individual baseline to monitor your pet’s health as they age.
During surgery, your pet is kept on intravenous fluids, which helps maintain blood pressure, supports organ function, and promotes a smoother recovery. As they wake up, our dedicated nursing staff closely monitors them, ensuring they remain warm, comfortable, and stress-free. Before going home, your pet will receive additional pain relief to keep them comfortable during recovery.
Desexing is a simple procedure that provides lifelong health and behavioural benefits for your pet. If you’re considering desexing, we’re here to guide you through the process. Book an appointment with us today!
