Taking your dog to the beach is a great way to spend the weekend, especially if they like running and swimming. But, running around in the sun and swimming in the ocean can get your dog in trouble too, if you’re not careful.

1. Invest in Doggy Sun Protection

Just like humans, dogs can get sunburns if they’re in the sun for too long without protection. You should apply sunscreen for dogs 30 minutes before they hit the water and every couple of hours throughout the day. You should also bring an umbrella so your dog can rest in the shade. You should always use a pet friendly sunscreen.

2. Bring a Life Jacket

A life jacket will keep your dog safe in the ocean, whether it’s their first trip to the beach or they’re a seasoned swimmer. Even dogs that love to swim can get caught up in dangerous waves, currents and riptides in the ocean.

You may be wondering, “When can I take my dog to the beach?” For optimal safety, you should always take your dog to the beach during or after low tide to avoid dangerous waves and currents as much as possible.

3. Don’t Let Your Dog Drink Salt Water

Swimming is exhausting, and your dog might be tempted to lap up some saltwater to quench their thirst. But drinking salt water is not good for dogs! To help your dog avoid the temptation of drinking ocean water, bring enough fresh water and make sure they know where to find it.

4. Take a Snack Break

In addition to bringing fresh water to the beach, you should also bring enough food to last your dog the entire day. Make sure you work snack breaks and rest into the beach day schedule. Your dog will need to refuel after running and swimming, and going into the ocean tired will make it a lot harder for your dog to swim.

5. Watch Out for Dangers in the Water

When you arrive at the beach, scan the shore and the water for things like sharp rocks, jellyfish, coral, octopus, oyster shells and other dangers. If safe to do so, remove these from the swimming area, and keep a close eye on your dog throughout the day to ensure they don’t get hurt or eat something they’re not supposed to.
